Case Study: Three MPV® VentuS® Type GAF Units for the DB Bahnbau Group
From November 2021 to December 2024, we delivered three MPV® VentuS® Type GAF units to the DB Bahnbau Group as modular track maintenance vehicles, including certification. The goal of the project was to provide a future-proof vehicle solution for demanding track construction applications—compact in design, modular in concept, and tailored to today’s technical and regulatory requirements in the mainline railway sector.
What made this project unique was not only its scope but also the regulatory framework: The vehicle type was the first track maintenance vehicle to be certified according to the TSI Loc&Pas and the 4th Railway Package within the agreed timeline. As such, the project serves as a model for a modern and sustainable longterm vehicle solution in track construction.

Initial Situation and Requirements for a Compact Track Maintenance Vehicle
The project originated from an urgent procurement and certification issue with existing vehicles. The task for the DB Bahnbau Group was to develop a solution that not only provided a short-term replacement but could also be deployed on the network long-term and meet today’s technical, operational, and certification requirements.
Based on a comprehensive set of specifications with detailed technical requirements, the goal was to develop a vehicle that was as compact as possible, featuring a diesel-electric drive concept and an additional traction battery. A key factor was the concept of a compact bogie vehicle with an overall length of just 16.5 meters, combining operational flexibility with high functional density.
Our Solution: Modular Track Maintenance Vehicle for Track Construction
To meet these requirements, we developed the MPV® VentuS® Type GAF as a coherent solution. The key factors were, above all, the high modularity of the vehicle concept and the ability to create a compact vehicle with functionality clearly tailored to track construction.
In this particular operating environment, it is crucial that a vehicle not only performs a single task but can also be integrated into various operational requirements. With the MPV® VentuS®, we were able to implement a concept that brings together compact design, technical performance, and future-proof capabilities.

Technical Features
The vehicle configuration was tailored to the requirements of the DB Bahnbau Group.
Key features include a crane without outriggers and an integrated traction battery, which complements the diesel-electric drive concept and opens up additional operational possibilities.
The combination of the drive concept, compact vehicle architecture, and modular equipment was a key component of the solution. The result is a track maintenance vehicle that is practically tailored to the customer’s requirements while also providing a robust foundation for future tasks.
Focus on practical benefits: Compact bogie concept in action
The vehicles are deployed throughout Germany by the DB Bahnbau Group, with a focus on central and southern Germany. There, our compact track maintenance vehicles prove their worth in an operating environment that places high demands on availability, robustness, and flexibility.
For the customer, the combination of high modularity and a compact vehicle design was the decisive factor. The MPV® VentuS® Type GAF combines the concept of a compact bogie vehicle with an overall length of just 16.5 meters with a design specifically tailored to the diverse requirements of track construction.

In addition, there is a tangible sustainability benefit: construction site operations lasting up to 2.5 hours can be carried out with zero emissions. As a result, the vehicle not only offers advantages for more modern operations but also opens up additional opportunities for use in sensitive or particularly demanding environments.
A Signal for the Rail Industry
The project is relevant beyond this specific customer case. The implementation and certification of this vehicle type demonstrate how modern track maintenance vehicles can combine regulatory requirements, operational practicality, and technological advancement.
For operators, construction companies, and procurement agencies, this sends an important signal: New vehicle solutions in track construction today must not only be powerful and economical, but also certifiable, adaptable, and designed with sustainability in mind. This is precisely where the project comes in.
Conclusion
With the MPV® VentuS® Type GAF, we have implemented a vehicle solution for the DB Bahnbau Group that combines technical requirements, approval reliability, and operational practice in a compact and modular concept. The project demonstrates how modern track maintenance vehicles can be specifically tailored to concrete
requirements on the network.
At the same time, this reference project represents an approach that goes beyond the individual vehicle: moving away from mere replacement procurement toward future-proof, flexibly deployable, and more sustainable vehicle platforms for track construction.
